This year, Ellis was able to finish a job he started in 2006, as he shot the ninth perfect game of the 2019 USBC Open Championships in his first game of singles May 30 at the South Point Bowling Plaza. At the 2006 event in Corpus Christi, Texas, he started his tournament campaign with a 299 game, leaving a 4 pin on his final shot. "I struggled a bit in doubles, so at the start of singles, I made a move and switched to a different bowling ball," said Ellis, who made his 12th tournament appearance this year in Las Vegas and added games of 165 and 195 for a career-best 660 singles series. "Suddenly, I had a good look." The 47-year-old right-hander added sets of 622 in team and 504 in doubles, finishing his 2019 Open Championships visit with a 1,786 all-events total. Five bowlers reach milestones at South Point Bowling Plaza The 50-Year Club at the USBC Open Championships got four new members this week, while one competitor made his 55th appearance on the tournament lanes. Stanley Schoenfeld of San Antonio and Tom Slezak of Sullivan, Missouri, made the ceremonial walk down the approach at the South Point Bowling Plaza and into the 50- Year Club on May 29. Herman Prakken of Oshawa, Ontario, Canada, added his name to the list May 30, and Thomas Hart of Morgantown, West Virginia, was recog- nized for his 50th year of participation June 3. Raymond Jensen of Greenwood, Indi- ana, became the newest member of the 55-Year Club at the Open Championships. On the lanes, Slezak, a 66-year-old right-hander who competed for the 50th con- secutive time, finished his 2019 Open Championships campaign with a 1,663 all- events total. That included a 568 series in doubles, 563 in team and 532 in singles. In 50 years on the championship lanes, he has knocked down 84,706 pins for a 188.2 career average. This year at the South Point Bowling Plaza, Schoenfeld, 74, rolled sets of 532 in singles, 524 in doubles and 514 in team for a 1,570 total. In 50 years, he has toppled 84,242 pins for a career average of 188.7. Prakken, a 74-year-old right-hander, was able to check another milestone off this week as he became the first Canadian bowler to reach 50 years of participation on the championship lanes. This year, he rolled sets of 518 in singles, 511 in doubles and 480 in team for a 1,509 all-events total. In 50 tournament appearances, he has knocked down 83,465 pins for a career average of 185.4. Hart, 78, shared the moment with his son, Jeff, who made his 25th Open Champion- ships appearance. The two also bowled doubles together this year. Thomas Hart finished his 2019 tournament with sets of 486 in team, 452 in singles and 429 in doubles for a 1,367 all-events total. In his 50 years of participation, he has knocked down 84,180 pins for a 187 career average. The four bowlers celebrating 50 years of participation this week each received a chevron, plaque and diamond lapel pin to commemorate the milestone. Jensen was presented with a chevron, plaque and engraved watch for his achievement. Jensen, 88, rolled sets of 482 in doubles, 458 in team and 404 in singles for a 1,344 all-events total. Jensen has knocked down 84,237 pins for a career average of 170. Utah first-timer leads Classified Singles and Classified All-Events in Las Vegas Jay Stratton of West Valley, Utah, a first-time participant at the USBC Open Champi- onships, finished his debut at the top of the standings in Classified Singles and Clas- sified All-Events. The 47-year-old right-hander took the singles lead June 2 with games of 175, 244 and 234 for 653 series, and his big finish catapulted him into the all-events lead with a 1,718 nine-game total. He rolled sets of 546 in team and 519 in doubles. Charles Vo of Sugar Land, Texas, previously held the sin- gles lead with 644, and Larry Meyers of Renwick, Iowa, topped the all-events standings with 1,707, which was rolled March 13, only five days into the 122-day event that con- cludes July 8. In accordance with USBC Rule 306 - All-Events, should Stratton's all-events score hold up, he would be awarded the 2019 Classified All-Events Eagle, but he would not be eligible for the prize money, since he did not enter the optional prize portion. The money would go to the next person in the standings. The Classified Division is for bowlers with entering averages of 155 and below.
