JUDEE and JERRY WOOD Beat
CANCER
Then Win at the LAUGHLIN BLAST
by Frank Weil
er
LAUGHLIN, NV - Great news: "CALIFORNIAN" Judee
Wood is back bowling after not picking up a bowling ball for
nearly two years. She commenced her comeback at River-
side Lanes in Laughlin last week competing in the Laughlin
Blast Handicap Senior No-Tap Doubles Tournament.
Judee has been fighting breast cancer for over a year now.
Her treatment and
recuperation schedule required her to suspend all bowling
activities. Instead of bowling she had a steady diet of radia-
tion and chemotherapy. In place of
teammates she had doctors and nurses. In place of strikes
and spares she had
naps and medications.
Until she was diagnosed with cancer Judee and husband
Jerry had been bowling in leagues for decades and compet-
ing in Laughlin No-Tap tournaments for the last fourteen
years. Having to stop bowling in 2015 was disappointing
and left a
void in Judee's life. Of course Jerry had to stop bowling
while he stood by Judee. Like most dedicated bowlers bowl-
ing was one of the central activities in their life's. They
missed bowling and we missed them. But now Judee is
winning her battle and the Wood family is back on the lanes
and back as winners.
They are back as winners because they were the first place
finishers at the
Laughlin Blast Handicap Senior No-Tap Doubles Tourna-
ment for the first day of
competition. Each day of competition is conducted as a
separate tournament.
Judee and Jerry won with a combined doubles score of
1,551 for three games:
Judee's score: 187 - 222 - 212 = 621 + 189 handicap =
810
Jerry's score: 253 - 242 - 165 = 660 + 81 handicap =
741
The second through fifth place scores were: 1,521 (2nd),
1,517 (3rd), 1,504
(4th) and 1,491 (5th).
Judee used her Storm Zero Gravity while Jerry used his
new Roto Grip No Rules to roll their winning score. Jerry
claims his No Rules ball is the strongest he has ever had. I
was there and watched Jerry's ball blow pins off the deck.
"BOOM, BAM, BY-BY". I have to agree with his claims.
Both balls were drilled by Jim Murtishaw and Judee and
Jerry are grateful for his recommendations and
expert drilling.
What a wonderful bowling story: "Judee and Jerry Wood
BEAT CANCER then win at the Laughlin Blast". BRAVO!
Bravo for Judee, her courage, persistence, and hard work.
Bravo for Jerry, his patience, his support, and encourage-
ment.
BRAVO BOWLING!
"Californian" MIKE RICK "Is on The Comeback Trail"
by Frank Weiler
MONTCLAIR - Mike Rick has not bowled from the "port side" since the summer of 2015. An ongoing bat-
tle with degenerative arthritis and thyroid surgery has forced him to become a right handed bowler. He has
had to learn to bowl all over again. As a result, last season was long and difficult with many of ups and
downs.
But, MIKE HAS ENDURED. Bowlers are tough, they're
resilient and they're persistent. Mike is a bowler and he is all
of the above.
Then, a few weeks ago, Mike heard that the West Coast
Senior Tour (WCST) had a tournament scheduled at
Bowlium Lanes. Since he had won at least a dozen WCST
tournaments in the past he wanted to find out if he still could
compete. He felt that a years rest for his left arm was
enough. It was time to jump in the pool and start paddling,
sink or swim.
While the odds were against him, Mike hit the lanes as if
he had never been away as a left handed bowler. He disre-
garded the pain and kept pushing oil down lane with the style
and consistency of old. He was " ON THE COMEBACK
TRAIL".
After eight games of qualifying he was in first place! He
was averaging 242 and was leading such CALIFORNIA
greats as Don Blatchford, Dale Eagle (PBA Hall of Famer), Diz Francisco, Larry Gray, Alvin Lou (Three time
PBA Champion), Jim Murtishaw (PBA Champion), Larry Rich and Ray Torres.
During Match Play Mike won four consecutive matches but then lost to Jim Murtishaw in the championship
match 246 - 225. What a performance by a California bowler "ON THE COMEBACK TRAIL". Second place
against the best California senior bowlers after a year long lay-off! WOW!
Congratulations Mike. Great job and hope your arm holds up.

South Point Senior Shootout
The goal of the South Point Senior Shootout is to
bridge the gap between Professional Bowlers Asso-
ciation events and the amateur-only "megabucks"
tournaments. Our purpose is not to determine who
can grind out a 200 game on an extremely challeng-
ing lane pattern, or who can count on their years of
professional experience to succeed in the
clutch. Nor are we trying to determine the "last man
standing" in a grueling 50-plus game single tourna-
ment.
Our hope is to create a fun, enjoyable experience
through three reasonably playable and significantly
different lane patterns, using multiple event formats,
and managing event eligibility. In our opinion, the
Shootout will be more successful (as determined by
number of entries) by ensuring as many bowlers as
possible have an opportunity to succeed, and not
have to compete against the Walter Ray Williams,
Jrs., Pete Webers, and Norm Dukes of the
world. We hope you'll agree.
The South Point Senior Shootout is made possible
only through the generous sponsorship of event
supporters. Special THANKS to South Point Hotel,
Casino, and Bowling Plaza as the Title Sponsor and
Host Facility. And we're tremendously appreciative
of Storm Products, Inc. as the Presenting Sponsor.
The South Point Senior Shootout is a locally or-
ganized and conducted multi-event bowling tourna-
ment for competitors age 50 and over. The SPSS
tournament concept and event formats were devel-
oped by a local Las Vegas committee consisting of
Dick Baker, Bill Hewlett, Howie Loosbroock, Ron
Mohr, and Tim Shirlock
