Modesto Teen Sets Record
By Dallas Kadry
Another record was broken for California and Modesto
bowlers this week. Matt Peters, 19, smashed the Mo-
desto youth record and is high for the year among the
state’s youth bowlers with his 878 series on games of
300-279-299 in the Junior Gold at McHenry Bowl. After
his first 12 strikes for the 300, Peters left a 4-pin in the
first frame and a 10-pin in the 11th for his 279. He
strung another 11 strikes before leaving a 10-pin again
on the final ball for his 299.
“I thought I might have a chance for my second 800
series after the first game,” Peters said, “but I never
thought it would be this high.”
He rolled his first 800 series one year ago, an 803.
Peters, a Modesto Junior College student taking com-
puter science classes, has been bowling most of his
life. His average skyrocketed from about 130 three
years ago to his current 205. He credits the added
competition in the San Joaquin Travel and Junior Gold
leagues and his former teammate Kyle Simi’s coaching
for his improvement. ...
Manny Simas won the men’s side of the McHenry No-
Tap Tournament, scoring an 893 that included a no-tap
300 game. Gene Stamps finished second with an 856,
also with a no-tap perfecto. Ron Gray took third with his
835 set. On the ladies’ side, Loretta Stigman topped
the field with an 860 series. Linda Standridge placed
second with an 822, and Betty Gerritsen was third with
an 806. ...
This week kicks off the month-long Bowling for the
Cure at McHenry. Bowlers pay $1 and use their league
scores for the prize board, which has prizes of different
values placed in random order. Wherever your score
lands on the list, that will be your prize. The last day to
enter is March 28. All proceeds go to the American
Cancer Society’s Relay for Life. ...
The Ladies No-Tap Trio Tournament is on the calen-
dar for Monday at McHenry. Tournament scoring starts
at 9:30 a.m., with check-in at 9. ...
