Our Founder Jeff McCorvey
Where It All Began
"The year was 1984. Fresh out of college after exhausting my collegiate bowling eligibility, with no clear direction toward a real job, what was the son of a PBA charter member to do? My main criteria for employment were the ability to bowl a lot, not have to get up early, and above all, NOT have to wear a tie. Having worked in pro shops while in high school and college, that seemed like the obvious path of least resistance. So, I opened McCorvey's Sports Shop (later changed to Pro Shop) in Huntsville, Alabama, on June 1, 1984. Since my dad, Joe McCorvey, was well known and respected in the bowling community, it was only logical to capitalize on our shared last name.
Business grew each year along with my reputation as a ball technician. Being a math nerd, I was fascinated with the technical aspects and was always eager to learn more about fittings and layouts. I opened a second location but closed it after a few years because it just seemed to be too much for me to handle. I decided one pro shop was enough. But in 1998, a new bowling center was built 12 miles from my pro shop, and the owners convinced me to open another location. I was hesitant, but 10 years of maturing proved to be the difference.
Pro shop #3 was located 150 miles from my home, so it was my first test of managing from a distance. From there, opportunities kept coming at an average of about four or five new shops each year. We went from store #3 to store #70 in a span of fifteen years. Some were in new bowling centers, some in centers that didn't have a pro shop, and some came from pro shop operators who wanted to retire.
Sadly, a few of the shops have closed due to the bowling centers closing. Over the years, our operations have expanded across multiple states throughout the country. I am often asked how I manage so many locations across such a wide geographic area, and the answer is simple—I hire good people. I look for honest, hardworking people with integrity who love to bowl. Everything else can be taught.
To be able to make a living doing what I love makes me incredibly lucky. And I'm even luckier to have had both of my children working alongside me to become the third generation of McCorveys in the bowling business and help ensure the continued success of the company I founded. We embrace continuing education and technology to better serve our customers. I am a charter member of the International Bowling Pro Shop Instructors Association, a Master Instructor, a past Board Member, and the first recipient of the Pro Shop Operator of the Year award.
In 2013, we made a bold decision to change our name from McCorvey's Pro Shop to Bowling World to paint a clearer picture of who we are and what we do. I was getting tired of people asking me if we were a golf pro shop. We dropped the slogan “The Complete Bowler's Pro Shop” and changed it to “For All Things Bowling.”"

Experience You Can Count On
We know you can buy a bowling ball anywhere, but it is our customer service, knowledge and our expertise in fitting the right equipment to you which makes us your best choice. We have the largest staff of IBPSIA Certified Ball Drilling Technicians and USBC Certified Coaches in the southeast. This gives us the unique perspective to help bowlers through both proper ball selection, fitting techniques and expert coaching.
Bowling World has grown and changed in ways we never could have imagined when we first opened our doors in 1984. But through all that growth, the things we value most have remained pretty simple: take care of people, do things the right way, keep learning, and never lose sight of why we're here in the first place. We believe in treating customers fairly, giving honest advice, standing behind our work, and creating an experience that makes every bowler feel welcome—whether they're buying their first bowling ball or have been competing for decades.
Our people are the reason we've been able to do that. Bowling World isn't one person, one store, or one corporate office. It's a team of people across all of our locations who share a genuine connection to the sport. We look for good, hardworking people with integrity who care about their customers and their communities. As our founder has always said, everything else can be taught. Bowling ball technology changes. Products change. The industry changes. But having people you can trust and who genuinely want to help others never goes out of style.
That also means we believe in investing in our team's knowledge. Bowling can be a complicated sport, and we don't expect our customers to walk through the door already knowing exactly what they need. That's our job. From professional fitting and drilling to equipment selection and coaching, we want our team to have the knowledge to explain not only what we recommend, but why we recommend it. We're proud of the expertise throughout Bowling World, but we also believe there's always more to learn. Continuing education and sharing knowledge across our team will always be an important part of who we are.
As we look toward the future, our vision for Bowling World goes well beyond simply opening more stores or selling more bowling equipment. We want to build the best place in bowling to shop, learn, and connect. That means continuing to improve the experience inside our pro shops while also finding new ways to serve bowlers wherever they are. The way people shop and learn about bowling will continue to change, and we intend to keep changing with it.
At the same time, growth only matters if we hold on to what made Bowling World successful in the first place. We never want to become so big that a customer feels like just another order number or one of our stores feels disconnected from the community it serves. Our goal is to combine the resources and opportunities of a growing company with the personal service and relationships of a local pro shop. We think there's something special about being able to do both.
Bowling World started as a family business, and that mindset continues to shape how we think about the company today. We're proud of where we've been, but we're even more excited about where we're going. There are new communities to serve, new bowlers to welcome into the sport, new ways to help experienced bowlers improve, and plenty of opportunities for us to get better along the way.
More than four decades later, our purpose is still pretty straightforward: take care of our people, take care of our customers, and do our part to make bowling better. If we continue doing those things well, we believe the rest will take care of itself.
