The Hammer Black Widow Spare Plus is a polyester bowling ball built around the asymmetric Gas Mask core. It is designed to perform two jobs: travel straight enough for routine spare shooting while retaining enough core dynamics to serve as a strike-ball option on extremely dry lanes and short, low-volume patterns.
That makes it fundamentally different from an ordinary plastic spare ball. At 15 pounds, the Spare Plus carries a 2.480 RG, .058 differential, and .013 intermediate differential—numbers normally associated with powerful reactive Black Widow releases. The difference is the polyester shell, which produces dramatically less lane friction than reactive resin.
The result should still be predominantly straight on normal conditions, but not completely inert. Bowlers with high rev rates, substantial axis rotation, or slower speed may see more movement than they would from a simple pancake-core polyester ball. That extra motion is the reason to buy the Spare Plus, but it is also the reason some bowlers should choose a more conventional spare ball instead.
The Spare Plus is particularly compelling for tournament players who want one ball to cover both corner pins and severely dry lane conditions. For bowlers who only need a ball to go as straight as possible at the 10-pin or 7-pin, its $149.95 price and high-differential core may be unnecessary complications.

The Gas Mask is one of Hammer’s most recognizable asymmetric core designs. In conventional Black Widow reactive balls, its high differential generates substantial flare, while its mass bias helps create a defined and forceful transition.
Inside the Spare Plus, that core operates beneath a much less responsive cover. The core can still migrate and create flare, but the polyester shell cannot grip oil—or friction—as effectively as reactive resin. Coverstock remains the dominant influence on the ball’s ability to hook.
This means the Spare Plus should not react like a Black Widow reactive ball with reduced surface. Instead, it should behave like a plastic ball with an unusually strong internal engine:
The polyester shell minimizes traction through oil.
The polished surface helps the ball retain speed.
The Gas Mask core creates more dynamic imbalance than a pancake core.
On extremely dry boards, the ball may establish a small but usable hook phase.
At spare-shooting angles, it should remain considerably straighter than reactive equipment.
The core’s primary practical benefits are likely to be a more defined roll on dry lanes, greater layout influence, and stronger continuation through the pins. It does not transform polyester into reactive resin.
Polyester is the correct cover choice for a dedicated spare ball because it creates minimal friction. It is less sensitive to oil volume than reactive resin, helping the bowler shoot a repeatable trajectory across changing lane conditions.
The Spare Plus is prepared with 500, 1000, and 2000 Siaair before receiving Factory Polish to maximize length and minimize unwanted traction.
That polished surface should be particularly useful when shooting:
Right-handed 10-pins.
Left-handed 7-pins.
Washouts and multi-pin combinations requiring a direct trajectory.
Spares across the lane where reactive equipment might encounter dry boards.
Straight-line conversions on sport patterns.
Polyester is also less absorbent than reactive resin, making reaction maintenance simpler. The surface will still accumulate belt marks and scratches, however, and those imperfections can increase friction or alter the ball’s path.
For most bowlers on normal lane conditions, yes. It will go straight.
But “straight” is relative. A 15-pound ball with .058 differential is not dynamically identical to a basic plastic ball with a pancake weight block. Whether that difference becomes visible depends on:
Rev rate.
Ball speed.
Axis rotation.
Axis tilt.
Layout.
Lane surface.
How much dry lane the ball crosses.
The condition of the polish.
A speed-dominant bowler using a firm, end-over-end spare release may see almost no meaningful hook. A rev-dominant two-hander who retains axis rotation at corner pins could see the ball stand up and move slightly when it reaches dry boards.
For players who struggle to flatten their hand, this is worth considering. The Gas Mask core may create more sensitivity than they want from a dedicated spare ball.
The Spare Plus becomes most interesting when the lane is too dry for reactive resin and too short or over-frictioned for a conventional benchmark ball. Hammer explicitly positions it for extremely dry lanes and short patterns with limited volume.
In this role, the ball should offer:
Exceptional length through burned heads.
Minimal response to residual oil.
A small, controlled move when it encounters sufficient friction.
More continuation and directional potential than a pancake-core spare ball.
A way to keep the launch angle closed when reactive equipment forces extreme moves.
This could be useful during late blocks on older wood surfaces, severely transitioned league conditions, short low-volume sport patterns, and specialty events where controlling friction is exceptionally difficult.
The important limitation is recovery. Polyester does not produce the same friction response as urethane or reactive resin. If the bowler moves deep inside and sends the Spare Plus toward the gutter, it may never recover. Its best strike-ball role should involve relatively direct angles, controlled speed, and a breakpoint close to the pocket.
It should be treated as an emergency dry-lane tool—not an ordinary light-oil benchmark.

A traditional spare ball is the safer recommendation when the only objective is eliminating hook at corner pins. It is cheaper, less layout-sensitive, and less likely to move when crossing dry boards.
The Spare Plus earns its premium when the buyer values the secondary strike-ball function or specifically wants a Black Widow-themed spare ball with a real performance core.
The Spare Plus should also be distinguished from urethane. Both can be used on short or dry patterns, but their reactions are different.
Urethane generally creates more continuous traction in the front and midlane. It can control the breakpoint while still producing a visible hook phase. Polyester is cleaner and straighter, with far less traction in oil.
Choose the Spare Plus over urethane when:
The lane is exceptionally dry.
Even urethane reads too early.
A very direct trajectory is required.
The same ball must serve as a spare shooter.
Choose urethane when:
The pattern is short but still contains meaningful oil.
Predictable traction is needed before the breakpoint.
The ball must create more pocket entry angle.
Carry with polyester becomes unreliable.
The Spare Plus can overlap with urethane at the extreme dry end, but it is not a general substitute for urethane.
This is the strongest target audience. The Spare Plus can fill two specialty roles without occupying two bag spaces: corner-pin spare ball and emergency dry-lane strike ball.
These players are the most likely to unlock its dry-lane capability. They are also the most likely to see unwanted movement at spares. A deliberate, low-rotation spare release will be important.
A two-hander who cannot reliably reduce axis rotation may be better served by a conventional pancake-core polyester ball.
Speed-dominant players should find it very straight at spares. They may struggle to generate enough motion for the dry-lane strike-ball role unless the lane is truly burned or the surface is adjusted.
For low-rev bowlers, the Gas Mask core may offer little practical advantage during spare shooting. Unless they regularly encounter exceptionally dry conditions, a cheaper plastic ball is likely the better value.
The White Diamond appearance and genuine Gas Mask core make the Spare Plus an attractive finishing piece for a Hammer arsenal. Brand appeal is a legitimate purchasing factor here, but it should not be confused with a performance necessity.
This is one of the strongest matches. The moderate differential helps control flare, while the low RG and strong cover provide traction without requiring the player to create more axis rotation. High-rev two-handed bowlers should find the shape especially useful when high-differential asymmetrics become too responsive.
Speed-dominant bowlers may appreciate the early-reading core and 1000-grit cover, particularly on heavy volume. The possible limitation is total recovery: players who project the ball far right may find that the Tour lacks the dynamic breakpoint of the Zero Mercy Solid or Hybrid.
Balanced tournament bowlers are likely to view it as a benchmark for medium-heavy conditions. On ordinary league shots, the box surface may be stronger than necessary, but a surface adjustment could broaden its usefulness.
Lower-rev players should approach carefully. The ball will read the midlane, but the moderate differential may not create enough recovery if they need significant help downlane. The higher-flaring Zero Mercy Solid or Hybrid may provide a more useful shape.
The factory-polished finish is the correct starting point for spare shooting. Bowlers should resist the temptation to sand the ball before understanding its box reaction.
Possible adjustments include:
Maintain factory polish: Maximum length and straightest spare reaction.
Lightly reduce polish: Slightly more dry-lane read without fundamentally changing the ball.
3000 grit: More usable traction as a dry-lane strike ball, with increased risk of movement at spares.
2000 grit: A specialized short-pattern treatment that moves the ball farther from its spare-first identity.
Anyone changing the surface should recognize the tradeoff: every increase in traction potentially improves strike-ball usefulness while reducing spare-line neutrality.
Keeping two distinct surfaces on duplicate balls could theoretically separate the roles, but buying two $149.95 polyester balls defeats much of the model’s space- and cost-saving appeal.
Polyester does not absorb lane oil in the same way as reactive resin, so routine maintenance is straightforward:
Wipe dirt and belt marks away after bowling.
Use a cleaner approved for polyester equipment.
Restore polish when the ball begins reading dry boards earlier than desired.
Inspect the shell for deep scratches or chips.
Avoid prolonged exposure to extreme heat or abrupt temperature changes.
The Spare Plus carries a one-year manufacturer warranty, compared with the two-year warranty Hammer lists for its high-performance reactive releases.
White polyester shells can reveal belt marks and grime more readily than dark bowling balls. The White Diamond finish should look striking when clean, but it may require more cosmetic attention.
The Black Widow Spare Plus is best understood as a specialty polyester performance ball that can shoot spares, not merely a premium-looking spare ball.

The Gas Mask core gives the Spare Plus a legitimate secondary purpose, particularly in 14 and 15 pounds. It also introduces complexity that most ordinary spare balls intentionally avoid. For the right competitive bowler, that tradeoff creates valuable versatility; for everyone else, it may simply be an expensive way to shoot a 10-pin.
